Why I Started a Daily Gratitude Journal (And Why I’ve Started Again)

Sapphire Blue Travel

There was a season not so long ago when life felt… heavy.

Like many people during COVID, I found myself searching for steadiness,
something simple that could hold hope in the middle of ordinary days.
Around that time, I was introduced to the idea of daily gratitude journaling.
What may have started as a simple way to switch my mindset, I slowly became aware that, throughout scripture, we are called to be thankful, joyful, and to trust God. I could recite a lot of the verse, but I had never noticed the link.
We find this in the bible:

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Gratitude wasn’t about pretending everything was perfect. It was about choosing to notice God’s goodness, even in small moments and turning it into a daily practice.
And slowly… that changed something in me.

The Honest Part

If I’m being completely transparent, and you know I always try to be.
There have also been seasons where I stopped journaling.
Life got busy, routines slip, and good intentions fade into the background. In the past couple of weeks, I’ve picked up my journal again.
And something gentle but powerful has returned.
As I sit each morning quietly, pausing to be thankful, starting the day with God instead of noise… It shifts the whole tone of the day, slowly there is calm and a confidence to do what I need do.

Why Daily Gratitude Still Matters

Gratitude doesn’t remove challenges, but it re-anchors our hearts.
It reminds us:

God is still present

Small blessings still exist

Hope is never completely gone

And sometimes, the most spiritual thing we can do
is simply whisper: Thank You, Jesus, for today.
There is a saying I keep seeing lately, and this is key, “Instead of telling God about your issues, tell your Issues who your God is.”

A Gentle Invitation

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, tired, or a little disconnected from joy, maybe this is your quiet nudge to begin again, too.
Not perfectly, just one small moment of gratitude each day.
Because ordinary days, placed in God’s hands, have the potential to become amazing, and even if it doesn’t change the situation, you hope, and your trust is redirected to God’s hands, and joy can be restored.

What This Journal Looks Like in Everyday Life

After months of using other people’s journals, I designed my own journal. This journal helps us focus on what we can do and record it, which helps us stay positive.
If you’d like to begin your own gentle rhythm of gratitude, you can find the journal here:

Each page of this journal is designed to gently guide you through a quiet daily pause with God.

It begins with a simple check-in —
how you’re feeling, what you’re grateful for, and what might help today feel a little lighter.

From there, the prompts invite you to reflect on relationships, self-care, and the small moments worth remembering,
before giving space for a Bible verse, daily goals, and unhurried journaling.

There’s no pressure to write perfectly.
No long devotionals to complete.
Just a calm, simple rhythm that helps you slow down, notice God’s goodness,
and begin each day with intention.

Because sometimes the most meaningful spiritual habits
are also the simplest ones.

And wherever you are today, I pray you notice at least one small reason to give thanks.
Because even the smallest light can brighten the whole day.
